The growth in under-age drinking of all types of alcoholic beverages is a problem that is not confined to the local market but is a worldwide phenomenon. Locally it has to be tackled vigorously on a collaborative basis by all industry players, together with authorities in public health and social welfare.
Our belief is that by working as a unified force in cooperation with Government to develop strategies for early identification and in evolving educational and interventionist measures that target the vulnerable, we can collectively provide the strongest, most effective and cost-efficient basis for combating excessive, harmful and inappropriate consumption. To this end, we play an active role in the Industry Association for the Responsible Use of Alcohol (ARA), a not-for-profit organisation registered with the national Department of Social Development that focuses on the prevention of the negative consequences of alcohol abuse.
The organisation’s interventions include public education, social norms programmes and responsible hospitality measures. With close ties to the Swiss-based International Council on Alcohol and Addictions and the Centre for Information on Beverage Alcohol, in London, the ARA has access to international research, best practice and intervention strategies, which offer culturally sensitive, relevant and pragmatic ways to reach youth and other groups at risk, such as pregnant women, road users, farm workers and marginalised communities, while also educating and monitoring those who sell alcohol either off- or on-consumption.
